The Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field is getting a major makeover! This $70 million renovation project, part of Georgia Tech's Full Steam Ahead initiative, aims to enhance the fan experience while preserving the stadium's historic charm. Here's a breakdown of the exciting changes:
Chairback Seating Revolution
The highlight of the renovation is the installation of 12,500 chairback seats. Say goodbye to traditional bleacher seating! The decision to go with fixed mesh chairbacks was made after careful consideration. While flip-up chairbacks were initially proposed, they were deemed unfeasible due to the stadium's narrow tread depths (25.75 inches in the upper east section). Eliminating every other row or reconstructing significant portions would have been too costly and time-consuming.
The chosen solution, bleacher-mounted mesh chairbacks, provides sufficient legroom and received positive feedback during testing. However, this change will result in a reduced seating capacity of approximately 50,000, still a significant increase from the original projected capacity of 42,000.
Enhancing the Fan Experience
Beyond the chairback seats, the renovation includes:
- State-of-the-art videoboard and sound system: Immerse yourself in a cinematic gameday experience.
- Premium Area Makeover: Remodeled suites, a new Founders Club, and an enhanced East Club with a VIP Members Club await.
- Improved Accessibility: Wider aisles and handrails will make navigating the stadium a breeze.
Preserving Tradition
Georgia Tech's commitment to preserving the stadium's character is evident. Vice President and Director of Athletics Ryan Alpert emphasizes the goal of maintaining the tradition and atmosphere that make Bobby Dodd Stadium so special.
Full Steam Ahead Initiative
This renovation is just the beginning of a $500 million fundraising endeavor. The Full Steam Ahead initiative aims to elevate Georgia Tech athletics to new heights, funding improvements to other facilities like the Zelnak Basketball Center and O'Keefe Gymnasium.
